Watermouth harbour is a beautiful sheltered cove between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin on the North Devon coast. In my painting Michael Irwin, the harbour master, is tending his boat, while further down the slipway are some local residents sitting on the harbour wall. When I paint from life inevitably people casually congregate and chat on the off chance they will be included in the painting!
During World War Two a pipeline was laid between Swansea oil refinery and Watermouth as a trial for PLUTO (Pipe Line Under the Ocean). Having proved its viability, PLUTO was then laid across the Channel following the D Day landings to supply fuel for the allied armies.
