Thundering Engines and Flying Spray. The Appledore lifeboats.
A limited edition lithographic print of 950. 21.5 x 15 inches approximately.
With thundering engines and flying spray the two Appledore lifeboats cut through the waves in Bideford Bay.
I was inspired to paint this scene when I was a crew member of the Clovelly lifeboat, an Artic 18, 'The Pride of Clovelly.' One winter’s morning we were exercising with the two Appledore lifeboats, a Tyne class and an Atlantic 21. It was a lively day and our three boats were running at speed, line abreast across the choppy waters of Bideford Bay. The roar of the engines, the spray bursting between the boats as they lifted off the waves and the winter morning sunlight reflecting off the water were exhilarating.
The coxswains of the Tyne class, 'The George Gibson' in the painting are John Pavitt and Mike Bowden.
