I was commissioned to paint a series of paintings for the Island Cruising Club in Salcombe. Their base for dinghy sailing and accommodation for the staff and students is the Egremont. I rowed a dinghy to a secluded beach on the banks of the river where I painted a sketch of the ship and her colourful gaggle of dinghies. As dusk approached and the sailing dinghies returned to the pontoon there was a magnificent sunset that filled the sky and cast a brilliant reflection on the calm waters of the Kingsbridge Estuary.
Egremont spent the first part of her working life crossing the river Mersey between Liverpool and Birkenhead. In 1976 she arrived in Salcombe to start a new life as the base for the Island Cruising Club. In 2012 she was transferred from the Island Cruising Club to the Egremont Trust to allow a dedicated team to focus on her upkeep.
