Philham Water near Hartland. 'Time for a walk.'
An open edition giclee print. 16 x 11 inches approximately.
I painted this pretty thatched cottage at Philham Water one summer over the course of a week. The delightful gentleman in the painting is Lord Thurlow who was very sociable and invited his builder and me in for coffee and lunch each day while we sat in his garden listening to the babbling brook at the back of the house. He had had a weir built in the brook so that as the water ran over the rocks it provided the lovely babbling, background music. The dog in the picture belonged to the builder who built the weir.
This was Lord Thurlow's country retreat and a far change from his former life. When I met him he had retired from government service and a long and distinguished career as High Commissioner of Nigeria and New Zealand and Governor of the Bahamas.
