Belstone Tor is on the edge of Dartmoor where ponies roam wild amongst the valleys and tors.
Now a days one rarely sees a pure bred Dartmoor pony on the Moor as most have cross bred with Shetland ponies. However, a neighbour of mine, Tony Brewington, rears the pure bred line and the ponies in the painting were used for this picture. They are slightly larger than Shetland ponies but beautifully proportioned - they do not look like Thelwell ponies! They also have long flowing manes and tails. The stallions can be very robust and will defend their mares and foals.
