I painted this scene of Dartmoor from life with my easel and large umbrella lashed down to prevent them blowing away. The massive granite boulders of Hay Tor are a landmark to many a traveller as they climb on top of the Moor above Bovey Tracey. The scudding clouds part as a shaft of sunlight dances across the valley from the rolling hills and rocky outcrops of Saddle Tor, a fleeting patch of sunshine briefly warming the sheep grazing the scrubby grass beneath the Granite Tor. A name justly earned, for nearby the quarry provided the granite for the building of London Bridge.
