I painted this scene from life. Lily lived in this cottage at the lookout in Clovelly and each day she fed 'Gully' her loyal seagull. I thought all seagulls looked the same, but after a few days even I could recognise Gully. In my painting he is perched atop a chimney while Lily looks out over Bideford Bay.
The cottages in Clovelly tumble down the cobbled street to a fourteen century harbour. For centuries the lookout has been the place where fishermen, their wives and families have looked out over the wide expanse of Bideford Bay to see the return of the fishing fleet.
