Clovelly Temple Bar. 'He's Coming Home.'
An open edition giclee print. 14 x 11 inches approximately
I stood in this garden of Temple Bar in Clovelly to paint this painting. The garden is so steep that George literally used a ladder to do the gardening. After I had finished painting the scene I asked my son, James, to stand on the steps beneath my studio pointing into the distance. The story of the painting is that he is pointing out to sea at his Dad’s ‘Picarooner’ coming home with the catch.
The house with the arch is called Temple Bar and is both beautifully looked after and is one of the oldest houses in Clovelly with the main street running through the arch. A Picarooner was a type of boat local to Clovelly and nearby Bucks Mills. It was lug rigged, carvel built and very strong as it had to be launched and recovered from the shingles.
