This was one of my favourite places to paint and I painted the scene from life. As well as the cottages, boats and surrounding countryside I think that the very heart of a village is the people. Therefore I always try and include local people in my paintings. Everyone is invariably fascinated by an artist painting from life and wants to see the painting gradually evolve. As a painting often takes a couple of weeks to complete I get to know everyone who comes to chat, it slows down the painting but makes the process most enjoyable!

The local fishermen, Stephen, Peter and John are yarning about their day’s fishing, Barry is re-roofing Krazy Kate’s whilst in the distance I have included myself on the slipway of the lifeboat station. My dinghy is the nearest boat and was built in Appledore for Clovelly probably a hundred years ago.

The large stone building on the right is a lime kiln, long disused and at the time was covered in the  beautiful wild flower Valerian which thrives in the sheltered, lime rich masonry.

Clovelly lies at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The ancient harbour is reached down a winding cobbled street with whitewashed cottages tumbling down the steep wooded hillside.
